New to this? The 5 words that matter

Amazon picks, packs, ships and handles returns for us — and charges a fee per item for it. A few smart choices while a product is still being designed (a flatter package, an ounce less, the right price) can save $1–2 on every single unit sold.

Size tier
How big your package is. Amazon sorts everything into size buckets — smaller buckets cost less. “Small Standard” is the cheap, happy bucket we aim for.
Weight bands
Fees go up in 2-ounce steps. Being a hair over a step costs the same as being well over it — so landing just under an edge is free money.
Dimensional weight
A “size-based weight.” Amazon charges the bigger of real weight or box size — like an airline charging for a big, light suitcase.
Referral fee
Amazon’s commission — a percentage of the price, like a sales fee. For our products it’s usually 8% or 15%.
Low-Price FBA
Price the item at $10 or under and Amazon automatically takes about 77¢ off the shipping fee. Works in every category.
💡
The single most important idea: Amazon charges you for the bigger of two numbers — how much the item actually weighs, or how much space its package takes up (“dimensional weight” = L × W × H ÷ 139). Think of checked luggage: a big, light bag still costs a lot. So every empty inch of box is money spent for nothing. (For the smallest “Small Standard” packages, Amazon skips this and just uses real weight.)

A real example: a 3-pack of scrunchies

Same product, two packaging decisions. Watch what a flatter mailer and a $9.99 price do to the fees.

✕ Boxed · priced $11.99
Size tierLarge Standard
Fulfillment fee$4.55
Referral (15%)$1.80
Amazon takes$6.35
Box is over 0.75″ thick → bumped to a pricier tier. Price over $10 → full 15% commission, no shipping discount.
✓ Flat mailer · priced $9.99
Size tierSmall Standard
Fulfillment fee$2.86
Referral (8%)$0.80
Amazon takes$3.66
Flat mailer stays in the cheap tier. Under $10 → shipping discount and the 8% Beauty rate.
→ Same scrunchies, $2.69 more kept per unit. Across 50,000 units that’s ~$135,000 a year — decided entirely at the design stage.

Dangerous Goods (Hazmat) surcharge

Applies to aerosols, flammable/high-alcohol liquids, pressurized cans, and lithium batteries (heated tools, LED devices). Higher fee schedule + higher storage. No Low-Price FBA discount.

The design rules, in plain terms

Keep it small & light

  • Aim for “Small Standard.” Keep the longest side under 15″ and thickness under 0.75″. A flat mailer beats a box.
  • Squeeze out empty space. Amazon can charge by box size, so a snug package saves money.
  • Land just under a weight step. Aim for 3.9 oz, not 4.2 oz.
  • Multipacks share one shipping fee. A 6-pack pays ~$3.35 once, not six times.

Price & ingredients

  • $10 or under is a double win in Beauty: the 77¢ shipping discount and 8% commission instead of 15%.
  • Flag aerosols, batteries, or flammable parts early. “Dangerous Goods” adds ~$0.80–1.20 per unit.
  • Go water-based / non-aerosol when you can to avoid that surcharge entirely.
  • When unsure, ask before specs are locked. Fixing a design on paper is free; fixing it after launch isn’t.
